Success brings unintended consequences – this is as true in land conservation as in other endeavors. If KLT didn’t exist, many of the wonderful places we have preserved would be houses, garages, driveways and lawns. The more successful we are, however, the more expensive neighboring properties become, and the more it costs to conserve them.
Take Jamies Pond Wildlife Management Area (JPWMA) for example. This 840 acre preserve is home to a variety of wildlife, forest habitats and recreational opportunities. Beautiful Jamies Pond offers a superb outdoor experience within 7 miles of the state capitol. And it makes nearby property more valuable - people are willing to pay a premium to live near conserved property.
Over the past ten years, KLT has focused on preserving property abutting the JPWMA. This fall we learned to our dismay about plans for a fourteen-lot subdivision next to Jamies Pond and in the Cobbossee Watershed. Then we learned that the plans had fallen through. We were able to act quickly because of our healthy acquisition fund. Over the years, we have asked you, our loyal and generous members, to help us grow this fund, and you have not let us down. As a result KLT has saved many significant conservation properties.
The 90-acre Bog Pond property required an investment of $35,000. This is a great win for conservation, and a good value in today’s real estate market, but it is a lot for KLT. Replacing these dollars will allow the trust to preserve future properties as they come on the market. (See KLT Newsletters, Spring 2007, on this site for details about this property.)
KLT has moved its Annual Appeal to June in order to “strike while the iron is hot” on the Jamies addition, and to separate our membership and capital campaigns. Please make a generous donation to this year’s Jamies Pond Appeal. Our mission is to protect the irreplaceable, important, and vulnerable natural places in our communities. Future generations will thank us for our foresight.
Meanwhile, we thank you for sharing our vision.
With all best wishes,
Deb Sewall - President
Norm Rodrigue - Development Chair
P.S. Funds raised in this campaign are targeted solely for land acquisition, and are separate from membership donations that support the trust’s operating expenses.
