Besse Historic Conservation Area, Wayne (F) The Besse Historic Conservation Area is a 55-acre
forest preserve with 0.3 miles of access along the Old Winthrop Road. Five generations of the Jabez Besse
family farmed this land from 1788 to 1913 and a portion of this preserve was part of the original farm
woodlot/wooded pasture. The preserve includes an easily accessible 0.4 acre vernal pool.
Access: No marked trails, but easy access from the road – look for KLT boundary markers. Vernal
pool access: from telephone pole #31 along the Old Winthrop Road, go north 300 yards into the woods.
Directions: Take Route 133 to Wayne Village. Turn south onto the Old Winthrop Road and go 0.7 mile
to a fork. Bear left and continue 0.3 mile to wooden KLT sign on the left.
