Challenges and Opportunities for Building Maine's Local Wood Economy - Architectural Design & Building Materials Discussion

On March 11th architects, designers, builders, and others including, Russell Edgar, from UMaine’s Wood Composite Lab, and Jeff Easterly, from NELMA, met in Portland to discuss the successes and challenges of promoting wood construction and wood heating systems in building design. Attendees generally agreed that wood is competitively priced and highly desired, and as a result commercial and institutional interests are becoming more motivated to use wood. On another positive note they also felt that building codes were trending toward greater acceptance of wood in ever expanding applications.
