Gott Pasture Preserve, Photo: Brian Kent
In 1812 the Property was owned by Joseph H. Underwood. He was a prominent figure in the town of Fayette and held almost every town office. Howard Mayo, who owned the property adjacent, took care of Joseph Underwood in his old age. Underwood decided to pass his farm down to Mayo who eventually sold the property in 1960 to the Matthews who had driven past the property for many years, admiring the beautiful open fields, while on their way to the Matthews Family Camp on Lovejoy Pond. Richard Mathews died in 1991 and in 1997 Bette became ill. She decided to add a provision into her will that gave a 17 acre parcel of land to the Kennebec Land Trust to be preserved for wildlife habitat. Richard and Bette’s children Alice, Jane, and Stephanie, placed a granite bench under the old maple tree in memory of their parents.
